Tin Can Wind Chime
Paint and decorate tin cans, thread them onto string at different lengths, and hang your musical wind chime to clink in the breeze!
Materials
- Flat Paintbrush
- Markers optional
- Poster Paint
- Scissors
- String
- Tape
- Tin Cans
Illustrated Steps
Prepare and Paint
Check cans for sharp edges (tape any), then paint each one a different bright colour.
Poke the Holes
Poke a small hole in the centre of each can's base for the string to pass through.
Thread the String
Thread string through each can at different lengths and tie all tops to a stick.
Decorate and Hang
Add patterns with markers or tape, then hang your wind chime outside to catch the breeze!
What You’ll Create
Your own outdoor orchestra! ๐ Your little musicians will transform empty tin cans into a beautiful wind chime by painting them in bright colours, poking holes in the bases, and threading them onto string at different heights. Hang it outside and listen to the gentle clinking sounds as the wind blows them together โ part art, part music, all magic!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Prepare and Paint the Cans
Take 3โ5 clean, empty tin cans (check for sharp edges โ cover any with tape). Paint the outside of each can with a different colour of poster paint. Use bold, bright colours for a stunning display. Let dry completely. โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed to check edges. ๐จ
Step 2: Poke the Holes
Using a nail and hammer (adult job!) or a sturdy scissors point, poke a small hole in the centre of the base of each can. The hole needs to be big enough for string to pass through. โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed. ๐จ
Step 3: Thread the String
Cut lengths of string at different sizes (20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm, etc.) so the cans will hang at different heights. Thread each string through a can’s hole from the inside. Tie a large knot or tape a small stick across the inside to stop it pulling through. Tie all the top ends to a single stick or coat hanger. ๐ชข
Step 4: Decorate and Hang
Add extra decorations โ wrap tape in stripes, draw patterns with markers, or tie ribbons between the cans. Hang your wind chime from a tree branch, garden hook, or window frame. Wait for the wind and listen to your creation sing! ๐ต
Have fun!
- ๐ต Fill one can with dried rice or beans before sealing โ now it’s a shaker AND a chime!
- ๐ Paint each can a colour of the rainbow for a spectrum wind chime!
- ๐ Add buttons, beads, or keys on extra strings between the cans for different sounds!
- ๐ Experiment โ do bigger cans make deeper sounds than smaller ones?
Why It’s Amazing
Sound Science: Different can sizes and thicknesses produce different tones โ an introduction to pitch, resonance, and acoustics. ๐
Recycling and Reuse: Transforming rubbish into art teaches environmental awareness and creative problem-solving. โป๏ธ
Measurement Skills: Cutting strings to specific lengths and spacing cans evenly introduces practical maths and precision. ๐
Cause and Effect: The wind chime only makes sound when moved by wind โ connecting weather to physical effects through direct experience. ๐ฌ๏ธ
Pro Tips
For ages 3โ5: Adults handle all sharp edges, holes, and threading. Let kids paint the cans and choose the colours. Hang it where they can reach to tap it manually!
For ages 5โ8: Let them paint and help with threading. Discuss why different string lengths make the cans hang at different heights. Challenge them to arrange cans from tallest to shortest.
For ages 8โ12: Research how real wind chimes are tuned โ the length of a tube determines its pitch. Experiment with different can sizes and record which sounds best. Try creating a musical scale by selecting cans of graduated sizes. Add a wind catcher (a flat piece of cardboard on a central string) to help the chime catch more breeze.
Secret Pro Move: Thread a large washer or heavy bead on a string in the centre of the chime as a “clapper” โ when the wind blows, it swings and strikes the cans consistently, making much more reliable and musical sounds! ๐ฏ
