Straw Weaving
Thread string through drinking straws to make a simple loom, then weave colourful yarn over and under to create a beautiful woven bookmark or mat!
Materials
- Scissors
- Straws
- String
Illustrated Steps
Thread the Straws
Thread string through 4โ5 straws and tie all the top ends together in a knot.
Start Weaving
Tie a new string to the first straw and weave over-under-over-under across all straws.
Push Down and Continue
Push woven rows down the straws. Keep weaving, changing colours for patterns.
Finish and Remove
Tie off the string, slide the straws off, and trim the ends. You've made woven fabric!
What You’ll Create
Time to become a master weaver! ๐งถ Your little textile artists will thread string through straws to create a simple but ingenious loom, then weave more string over and under the straw “warp” threads to build up a beautiful woven fabric. The result? A gorgeous handmade bookmark, bracelet, or mini mat that they made entirely themselves โ from setting up the loom to the finished weave!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Thread the Straws
Cut 4โ5 straws to the same length (about 12 cm works well). Cut a long piece of string and thread it through each straw, leaving about 10 cm of string poking out each end. These straw-covered strings are your “warp” โ the vertical threads of your loom. Tie all the top ends together in a knot. ๐ฅค
Step 2: Start Weaving
Cut another long piece of string in a different colour. Tie one end to the first straw. Now weave over the first straw, under the second, over the third, under the fourth โ all the way across. When you reach the end, turn around and go back the other way: under, over, under, over. Keep it snug but not too tight! ๐ชข
Step 3: Push Down and Continue
As you weave more rows, gently push the woven string down the straws to pack the rows tightly together. Keep weaving over-under-over-under, row after row. You can change colours by tying a new piece of string to the end of the old one. Watch your woven fabric grow! ๐
Step 4: Finish and Remove
When your weaving is as long as you want, tie off the weaving string securely. Now for the magic part โ carefully slide the straws off the warp strings! The weaving holds its shape beautifully. Tie off the loose ends at top and bottom, and trim any straggly bits with scissors. You’ve made a real woven textile! โจ
Have fun!
- ๐ Make a bookmark by keeping it narrow โ weave through just 3 straws!
- ๐ Create a rainbow by changing string colour every few rows!
- ๐ Weave a bracelet or friendship band as a gift!
- ๐งฎ Count your rows โ can you make a pattern that repeats every 4 rows?
Why It’s Amazing
Ancient Craft Connection: Weaving is one of humanity’s oldest technologies โ children connect with a craft that dates back thousands of years! ๐๏ธ
Mathematical Patterns: The over-under-over-under rhythm is a binary pattern โ children internalise alternating sequences through physical repetition. ๐ข
Fine Motor Mastery: Threading string through straws and maintaining the weaving pattern develops exceptional finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination. โ
Patience and Persistence: Weaving builds slowly, row by row โ children learn that sustained effort produces impressive results. ๐
Pro Tips
For ages 3โ5: Use thick yarn and wide straws (smoothie straws or boba straws work great). Start with just 3 straws for a simple over-under pattern. An adult should thread the straws. Tape the top knot to the table so it doesn’t slide around.
For ages 5โ8: Use 4โ5 straws and standard string. Encourage colour changes and pattern planning. Talk about what “over” and “under” mean. Challenge them to keep the edges straight โ it’s harder than it looks!
For ages 8โ12: Use 6+ straws for wider pieces. Introduce more complex patterns โ twill weaving (over 2, under 1), or incorporate beads threaded onto the weft string. Research different weaving traditions from around the world. They can create placemats, phone pouches, or wall hangings!
Secret Pro Move: Thread a large plastic tapestry needle with your weaving string โ it makes the over-under threading SO much easier and faster than pushing floppy string through. Find them at any craft shop for pennies! ๐ชก
