Straw Pan Flute

Cut straws to different lengths and tape them in order to build a real working pan flute — then play a tune!

Cut Your Straws

Cut 6-8 straws to different lengths, each about 1.5cm shorter than the last. Line them up like a staircase.

Arrange and Tape Together

Line up straws longest to shortest with tops level. Tape across the front and back to hold them in a row.

Seal the Bottoms

Fold tape over the bottom of each straw to seal it shut. This makes the notes louder and clearer!

Play Your Flute!

Hold the flute to your lower lip and blow gently across the tops. Each straw makes a different note!

What You’ll Create

Musicians, warm up your lips! 🎶 Your little composers will cut straws to carefully measured lengths, arrange them from longest to shortest, and tape them together to create a genuine working pan flute. Blow across the tops and each straw produces a different musical note — shorter straws make higher sounds, longer straws make lower sounds. It’s a beautiful instrument that actually plays!

For ages 8–12: Introduce the maths — if the longest straw is 20 cm, the next should be about 18 cm, etc. Challenge them to tune their flute to a real musical scale by comparing with a piano or app. Explore why closed tubes sound different from open ones.

Secret Pro Move: Use paper straws instead of plastic — they produce a warmer, rounder tone. And if you flatten one end of each straw slightly before sealing, the notes ring even clearer! 🎶
