Indoor activity
Straw-Blown Paint Art
Create explosive, abstract masterpieces by blowing through a straw! A fun and messy way to explore fluid dynamics and colour mixing.
Materials
- Paper
- Poster Paint
- Spoon
- Straws
- Water
Illustrated Steps
Thin Your Paint
Mix poster paint with a little water until it is runny but bright.
Drip the Paint
Use a spoon to drip a puddle of thinned paint onto your paper.
Blow Through the Straw
Blow a sharp burst of air through the straw at the paint puddle.
Add More Colours
Add new colours and blow them together to create patterns.
What You’ll Create
Get ready for some messy, colourful fun! 🎨 In this activity, you’ll use a Straw to blow liquid Poster Paint across a sheet of Paper. Instead of using a brush, your breath will create amazing, ‘splattered’ patterns that look like fireworks or wild coral reefs. It’s a fantastic way to see how paint moves and mixes!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Thin Your Paint
In a small cup or tray, mix a blob of Poster Paint with a little bit of Water. Use a Spoon to stir it until it’s thin enough to run, but still keeps its bright colour.
Step 2: Drip the Paint
Use your Spoon to scoop up a small amount of thinned paint and let it drip into a big, wet puddle in the middle of your Paper.
Step 3: Blow Through the Straw
Hold your Straw close to the paint puddle (but not inside it!) and blow a sharp burst of air. Watch as the paint shoots out in different directions like a colourful explosion!
Step 4: Add More Colours
Drip another colour right next to or on top of your first one. Blow again and watch the colours mix and create new shapes and shades!
Have fun!
- 🎆 Make ‘Paint Fireworks’ by using bright neon colours on dark paper.
- 🌿 Create a ‘Monster Garden’ by blowing green paint to make wild, spindly grass.
- 🥤 Try using different sized straws to see how the air pressure changes the patterns.
- 👀 Add Googly Eyes to your dried paint splats to turn them into funny monsters!
Why It’s Amazing
- Fluid Dynamics: Children learn how air pressure and liquid thickness affect movement. 🌬️
- Colour Theory: Watching paints overlap and blend is a perfect hands-on lesson in mixing. 🌈
- Breath Control: Blowing through a straw is great for developing oral motor skills and focus. 🌬️
- Creative Freedom: There’s no ‘right’ way to do it, which builds artistic confidence! ✨
Pro Tips
For ages 3–5: Help them thin the paint to just the right consistency. Remind them to blow out and not suck in! ⚠️
For ages 5–8: Encourage them to try blowing from different angles to see how it changes the length of the paint ‘arms’.
For ages 8–12: Challenge them to ‘steer’ the paint into specific shapes, like a tree trunk with many tiny branches.
