Illustrated Steps
Plan Your Characters
Before writing, spend five minutes planning the hero, the problem, and the ending on scrap paper. A good plan makes writing easy.
Fold and Bind the Pages
Fold 4–6 sheets of paper together into a booklet. Snip a notch at the spine and thread tape through to bind it firmly.
Write the Story
Write one or two sentences per page in large clear letters, leaving the lower half blank. This space is reserved for the illustration.
Illustrate Each Scene
Draw a bold, full-half-page scene for each page of text. Add colour, speech bubbles, and backgrounds to bring the story to life!
What You’ll Create
A real, handmade book! 📖 You and your child will write, illustrate, and bind a personal mini storybook — complete with characters they invent, a plot they devise, and pictures they draw themselves. Every copy is a unique masterpiece that will be treasured for years.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Plan Your Characters
Before touching the good paper, spend five minutes talking through the story. Who is the hero? What is the problem they face? How does it end? Jot ideas on a scrap — this is the story plan and it makes everything easier.
Step 2: Fold and Bind the Pages
Fold 4–6 sheets of paper in half together to make a booklet. Use scissors to snip a small notch at the spine fold, thread a strip of tape through it and fold it over to bind. Press the spine firmly. Add a thicker card cover if you have one.
Step 3: Write the Story
Use markers or colouring pencils to write the text in large, clear letters — one or two sentences per page. Leave the lower half of each page completely blank for the illustrations.
Step 4: Illustrate Each Scene
Draw the scene for each page of text. Encourage bold, full-page illustrations with lots of colour. Add speech bubbles, patterns, and backgrounds to bring the story world vividly to life!

Pro Tips
For ages 3–5: Let them dictate the story while you write — their job is the illustrations. Even scribble art is wonderful!
For ages 5–8: Aim for 8 pages with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Introduce the concept of a “problem” and a “solution”.
For ages 8–12: Challenge them to write a chapter book — one chapter per session — and bind all chapters together at the end into a full novel.
