Illustrated Steps
Gather Your Puppet Supplies
Collect one colourful sock per puppet, markers, scissors, and tape. Lay everything out on a flat surface ready to go.
Draw the Face
Slip the sock on your hand and draw eyes and a nose with markers while wearing it — so the face lands in exactly the right place.
Add Hair and Features
Tape on paper strips as hair and add eyebrows, freckles, or a crown. Make a villain and a hero for maximum drama!
Perform the Show
Drape a blanket over a table as a stage. Give each puppet a voice and act out a story with a problem and a resolution.
What You’ll Create
You and your little one will bring characters to life by turning ordinary socks into loveable puppets with faces, hair, and personalities! 🎭 Then it’s showtime — perform a story on your very own puppet stage made from a table and a blanket.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Gather Your Puppet Supplies
Lay out one sock per puppet, a set of markers, some scissors, and a roll of tape. Choose socks in fun colours — the brighter the better! Each puppet will need its own personality.
Step 2: Draw the Face
Slip the sock over your hand with four fingers in the toe and your thumb underneath to form the mouth. Use markers to draw two big eyes and a nose on the sock while wearing it — this ensures the face is in exactly the right place.
Step 3: Add Hair and Features
Cut strips of tape and press on paper scraps as hair, or draw spiky lines with markers for a funky hairstyle. Add eyebrows, freckles, or a crown — your puppet, your rules! Try making a villain and a hero.
Step 4: Perform the Show
Drape a blanket over a low table to create a stage. Give each puppet a name and a silly voice, then act out a story — introduce a problem for the heroes to solve! Bow at the end and take a curtain call.
Have fun!

Why It’s Amazing
- Language Skills: Giving puppets voices and dialogue builds vocabulary and storytelling ability. 🗣️
- Emotional Intelligence: Children safely explore different feelings through their characters. ❤️
- Fine Motor Skills: Drawing faces and cutting features sharpens hand control and grip. ✂️
- Creativity: Open-ended play with no wrong answers encourages bold imaginative thinking. 🌟
Pro Tips
For ages 3–5: Do the cutting yourself and let them focus on drawing the face. Simple eyes and a mouth is enough for a great puppet!
For ages 5–8: Challenge them to write a script with a beginning, middle, and end before performing.
For ages 8–12: Add a set design behind the stage and challenge them to write a five-minute play with at least three characters and a surprise plot twist.
