Shaving Cream Rain Cloud
Create a weather experiment in a jar and watch how 'rain' falls from a fluffy shaving cream cloud!
Materials
- Dropper
- Food Colouring
- Glass Jar
- Shaving Cream
- Water
Illustrated Steps
Fill the Atmosphere
Fill a glass jar about three-quarters full with clean, clear water.
Create the Cloud
Squirt a thick layer of shaving cream on top of the water to make a fluffy cloud.
Prepare the Rain
Mix a few drops of food colouring with a little water in a separate small cup.
Make It Rain!
Use a dropper to add blue water to the cloud and watch the rain fall into the jar!
What You’ll Create
Ever wondered how rain falls from clouds? ๐ง๏ธ In this beautiful science experiment, you’ll create a miniature weather system inside a Glass Jar. Using fluffy Shaving Cream as a ‘cloud’ and blue Food Colouring as ‘rain’, you’ll see exactly what happens when a cloud gets too heavy with water. It’s a magical, colourful way to learn about the water cycle!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Fill the Atmosphere
Fill your Glass Jar about three-quarters of the way with clear Water. This represents the air or atmosphere below the clouds.
Step 2: Create the Cloud
Squirt a large, fluffy mound of Shaving Cream on top of the water. Make sure it covers the entire surface but don’t fill the jar to the very top. This is your ‘rain cloud’!
Step 3: Prepare the Rain
In a small cup, mix a few drops of blue Food Colouring with a little bit of water. This concentrated blue liquid will be our ‘rainwater’.
Step 4: Make It Rain!
Use a Dropper to carefully add the blue water onto the top of the shaving cream cloud. Watch closely! At first, the cloud will hold the ‘rain’, but as it gets heavier and heavier, the blue water will suddenly break through and ‘rain’ down into the clear water below in beautiful swirls.
Have fun!
- ๐ Try using different colours of ‘rain’ to create a rainbow storm in your jar.
- โ๏ธ Does a bigger shaving cream cloud take longer to rain? Experiment with different cloud sizes.
- ๐ฆ Shine a Flashlight through the jar to see the ‘rain’ sparkles as it falls.
- โฑ๏ธ Use a stopwatch to see how long it takes for the first drop of rain to fall through the cloud.
Why It’s Amazing
- Meteorology Basics: Explains the scientific concept of saturation โ how clouds hold water until they can’t anymore. โ
- Sensory Exploration: The contrast between the fluffy white foam and the swirling blue liquid is visually stunning and calming. ๐๏ธ
- Fine Motor Skills: Using a dropper requires precision and control of small hand muscles. ๐ค
- Scientific Observation: Encourages kids to predict when the ‘rain’ will fall and watch for the exact moment it happens. ๐งช
Pro Tips
For ages 3-5: Let them squirt the shaving cream (with help!). They will love watching the ‘magic’ colours appear in the water.
For ages 5-8: Talk about the real names for parts of the water cycle, like ’evaporation’ and ‘precipitation’.
For ages 8-12: Turn it into a competition! See who can add the most drops of water before the first ‘rain’ breaks through.
