Illustrated Steps
Draw with Glue
Squeeze PVA glue in thick lines on dark paper to draw your design — rainbows, swirls, or your name!
Cover in Salt
Sprinkle salt generously over the wet glue. Tilt to shake off excess — your design sparkles!
Mix Paint Colours
Mix poster paint with lots of water in small cups to make thin, watery colours.
Touch and Watch It Flow
Gently touch the paintbrush to the salt lines. Watch the colour spread magically along the trail!
What You’ll Create
Prepare to be amazed! 🎨 Your young artists will discover the magic of salt painting — draw a design with PVA glue on dark card, sprinkle salt over the glue, then touch watercolour paint to the salt trails and watch the colour spread and flow along the lines like magic! The salt crystals absorb the paint and carry it in both directions, creating stunning, textured artwork.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Draw with Glue
Place a sheet of dark paper or card on a baking tray (to catch salt). Use PVA glue to draw a design — try a rainbow arc, a snowflake, swirls, or your name! Squeeze the glue in thick, raised lines so there’s plenty for the salt to stick to. 🖌️
Step 2: Cover in Salt
While the glue is still wet, generously sprinkle salt all over the glue lines. Cover everything — don’t be shy! Gently tilt the paper to shake off the excess salt back onto the tray. You’ll see your design appear as a raised, sparkly salt trail. ✨
Step 3: Mix Paint Colours
Prepare your colours by mixing poster paint with plenty of water in small containers to make very watery paint. You want it thin like watercolour. Make several bright colours — the more colours the more magical the effect! 🎨
Step 4: Touch and Watch It Flow
Dip a paintbrush in watery paint and gently touch it to the salt lines — don’t brush, just touch! Watch the colour spread along the salt trail in both directions. Touch different colours at different points and watch them flow towards each other. Magic! 🌈
Have fun!
- 🌈 Make a rainbow — draw arcs and use a different colour on each one!
- ❄️ Create salt snowflakes on blue paper for a winter scene!
- 🌊 Draw ocean waves and touch blue and green paint — watch them merge!
- ✍️ Write your name in glue and make each letter a different colour!
Why It’s Amazing
Science in Action: Children witness capillary action — liquid moves through tiny spaces between salt crystals without gravity. Real science, visible and beautiful! 🔬
Process Art: The paint flowing along the salt is partly unpredictable — children learn to embrace surprise and appreciate art where the process matters more than perfection. 🎨
Fine Motor Control: Squeezing glue bottles to draw precise lines builds hand strength and dexterity essential for writing. ✋
Sensory Exploration: The textures — wet glue, gritty salt, smooth paint — provide rich sensory input that supports cognitive development. 🧠
Pro Tips
For ages 3–5: An adult should draw the glue design (or use simple shapes like circles and lines). Let the child sprinkle salt and do the magical paint-touching moment — that’s the best part! Use chunky brushes.
For ages 5–8: Let them draw their own glue designs. Teach the “touch, don’t brush” technique carefully. Encourage them to plan which colours go where and predict what will happen when two colours meet.
For ages 8–12: Challenge them to create detailed artwork — cityscapes, mandalas, or detailed patterns. Experiment with paint consistency (more vs less water), salt grain size (fine vs coarse), and timing (fresh glue vs slightly dried).
Secret Pro Move: Use black card or dark blue paper instead of white — the salt crystals and bright paint colours pop dramatically against the dark background, making the effect ten times more stunning! 🎯
