What You’ll Create
Mix up a batch of gloriously squishy, brightly coloured homemade playdough and open your very own bakery! ๐ฐ๐ฅ Your child becomes chef, baker, and shopkeeper all at once โ rolling, shaping, and ‘selling’ everything from croissants to birthday cakes, using nothing but kitchen staples.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Make the Playdough
In a bowl, mix 2 cups of Plain Flour, 1 cup of Salt, and 2 tablespoons of Vegetable Oil. Stir in warm water a little at a time until a soft, non-sticky dough forms (about half a cup). Divide into portions and knead a few drops of Food Colouring into each โ keep kneading until the colour is even throughout. ๐
Step 2: Set Up the Bakery Counter
Arrange several Small Containers as display trays and serving dishes. Clear a section of table as the bakery counter. Optionally, make a little sign together using a sheet of paper and markers โ ‘Ben’s Brilliant Bakery’ has a nice ring to it! ๐ช
Step 3: Bake!
Show your child how to roll logs (baguettes!), flatten discs (cookies!), and pinch edges (tarts!). Then step back and let their imagination run wild. Every lump is a masterpiece. ๐ฅ
Have fun!
- ๐ Take turns being the baker and the customer โ use buttons or pebbles as coins
- ๐ Create a layered birthday cake with candles made from pencils or twigs
- ๐ Hold your own Great British Bake Off โ give each other scores out of ten
- ๐ธ Photograph the finished display before squishing it all back into a ball
- ๐ข Practise maths: ‘That’s 3 cookies โ I need 5. How many more do you need to bake?’
Why It’s Amazing
- Sensory Development: Kneading, squeezing, and moulding playdough is deeply satisfying for young hands and excellent for sensory integration. ๐๏ธ
- Imaginative Play: Running a pretend shop builds rich language, narrative thinking, and social skills through roleplay. ๐
- Fine Motor Skills: Rolling, pinching, and shaping develops the hand strength children need for writing and drawing. โ๏ธ
- Early Science: Mixing dry and wet ingredients and watching dough form is a child’s first experience of chemistry โ ingredients combining to become something totally new. ๐งช
Pro Tips
For ages 3โ4: Focus entirely on the sensory joy of squishing. Don’t worry about recognisable shapes โ it’s the process, not the product, that matters at this age!
For ages 4โ5: Introduce simple tools โ a blunt knife for cutting, a fork for pressing texture, a rolling pin (or tall plastic cup) for flattening.
Storage tip: Homemade playdough keeps in an airtight bag or container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Double the recipe to have more colours on hand!
