What You’ll Create

Lights, camera, fingers! ๐ŸŽญ Your little puppet masters will twist and bend colourful pipe cleaners into adorable tiny characters that perch right on their fingertips. Make a whole cast โ€” animals, people, monsters, aliens โ€” add googly eyes for instant personality, and put on the most entertaining finger puppet show your living room has ever seen!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Make the Finger Loop

Take a pipe cleaner and wrap the middle section around your finger once to create a snug ring โ€” this is how the puppet stays on your fingertip. Twist the pipe cleaner where it overlaps to secure the ring. You should have two free ends sticking up above the ring like rabbit ears. This is the base of every puppet! ๐Ÿ’

Step 2: Shape Your Character

Bend and twist the free ends into your character’s shape. For an animal, fold them into pointy ears. For a person, curve them into arms. For an octopus, add more pipe cleaner pieces and curl the ends into tentacles. Use different coloured pipe cleaners twisted together for stripes or multi-coloured characters! ๐Ÿ™

Step 3: Add Eyes and Details

Stick googly eyes onto the front of your puppet using a tiny dab of PVA glue. For extra personality, use markers to draw a mouth on a tiny scrap of paper and glue it on, or bend a thin pipe cleaner piece into a smile. Each puppet should have its own unique expression! ๐Ÿ‘€

Step 4: Put on a Show

Make 3โ€“5 different puppets and put one on each finger. Now you have a full cast! Hide behind a cushion or the back of a sofa (that’s your stage), pop your fingers up, and perform a story. Give each puppet a different voice and personality. The audience will love it! ๐ŸŽช

Have fun!

Why It’s Amazing

  • Fine Motor Mastery: Twisting, bending, and shaping pipe cleaners around tiny fingers develops exceptional dexterity and hand strength. โœ‹

  • Storytelling and Language: Creating characters and performing stories develops narrative skills, vocabulary, and confidence in speaking. ๐Ÿ“š

  • Creative Problem-Solving: Working out how to make a 3D character from bendy sticks requires real engineering thinking and spatial awareness. ๐Ÿง

  • Social-Emotional Skills: Giving puppets personalities and emotions helps children explore and express feelings through safe, imaginative play. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“5: An adult should make the finger loop (small fingers can be fiddly). Keep characters simple โ€” just ears and eyes make a perfectly good bunny! Focus on the imaginative play rather than complex construction.

For ages 5โ€“8: They can make their own finger loops with a bit of practice. Encourage them to plan their character before building โ€” “What does a dragon need? Wings? A tail? Horns?” Challenge them to create a cast and write a short story.

For ages 8โ€“12: Challenge them to create articulated puppets with movable parts โ€” jointed arms, opening mouths using clever folding. Make a proper puppet theatre from a cardboard box. Write scripts, design sets, and perform for family!

Secret Pro Move: Wrap the finger loop section with a second pipe cleaner in a contrasting colour โ€” it makes the puppet sit more securely on the finger AND looks more polished. For tiny facial features, use a fine-point permanent marker directly on the pipe cleaner surface! โœ๏ธ
