Materials
- Flat Paintbrush
- Markers
- Paper
- Poster Paint
- PVA Glue
- Smooth Pebbles
Illustrated Steps
Collect & Wash Pebbles
Gather 3-5 smooth, flat pebbles from the garden. Rinse under warm water and dry completely — paint won't stick to damp stone.
Plan Your Design
Sketch your animal designs on paper before painting. Lay pebbles on the paper to match each shape to a creature.
Paint the Base Coat
Cover the top of each pebble with one solid colour using a flat brush. Let dry fully before adding more paint.
Add Details & Features
Add spots, eyes, wings, and patterns with a thin brush and contrasting colours. Use a black marker for fine outlines and pupils.
Seal with PVA Glue
Brush a thin coat of PVA glue over the dry painted surface. This protects the design and gives it a glossy finish.
What You’ll Create
Transform ordinary garden pebbles into adorable painted pets — ladybirds, owls, frogs, and more! Using just paint and markers, you’ll turn smooth stones into a whole collection of charming creatures to display, give as gifts, or hide in the garden as a surprise for others to discover.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Collect & Wash Your Pebbles
Head outside and gather 3–5 smooth, flat pebbles. River stones and garden pebbles with a flat, even surface work best. Rinse them under warm water and dry thoroughly with a cloth. The pebbles must be completely dry before painting.
Step 2: Plan Your Design
Before opening any paint, sketch your pet designs on paper first. Simple shapes work brilliantly — a red oval becomes a ladybird, a round circle becomes an owl, a flat oval becomes a frog. Lay your pebbles on the paper and decide which animal each one will become.
Step 3: Paint the Base Coat
Apply one solid colour as the background for each pebble using a flat brush and thick poster paint. Cover the whole top surface evenly. Let it dry completely (about 20 minutes) before adding more colour. Repeat if the stone colour shows through.
Step 4: Add Details & Features
Once the base coat is dry, use a thin brush and contrasting colours to add spots, eyes, wings, and patterns. Finish with a black marker pen for small details like pupils and outlines. Black dots make great eyes!
Step 5: Seal Your Pebble Pet
Once all paint is completely dry, brush a thin coat of PVA glue over the entire painted surface. This seals and protects the design and gives it a lovely glossy sheen. Leave to dry for 30 minutes before handling.
Have fun!
- Hide your pebble pets around the garden for family members to discover
- Create a whole zoo collection with different animals
- Write a friend’s name on the back and give it as a gift
- Make themed sets — a woodland family, a pond scene, an ocean crew
- Paint emoji faces on tiny pebbles for a stone mood collection
Why It’s Amazing
- Fine Motor Skills: Holding a paintbrush and adding small details builds the precise hand control children need for writing.
- Creative Expression: Choosing colours and designing animals helps children develop their own artistic voice and confidence.
- Mindfulness: The slow, focused process of painting calms the mind — it’s naturally meditative and relaxing.
- Pride & Ownership: A finished pebble pet is durable and impressive — children beam when they show off their collection.
Pro Tips
A slightly damp brush spreads poster paint more smoothly — a tiny drop of water before dipping into paint makes a big difference. If paint looks streaky, let it dry fully and add a second coat rather than fixing it while wet. For younger children, limit to one base colour and simple dot patterns — a red pebble with black dots makes a perfect ladybird in just two steps!
