Illustrated Steps
Make a Square
Fold one corner of a sheet of paper diagonally to align two edges. Crease firmly, then tear or cut away the rectangular strip below to leave a perfect square.
Fold the Corners In
Lay the square flat and fold each of the four corners to the centre point. Press each crease firmly. The paper should look like an envelope.
Flip and Fold Again
Flip the square over and fold the four new corners to the centre point again. Press each crease firmly to make a smaller square.
Decorate It
Write a colour on each outer flap, numbers 1–8 on the inner triangles, and a secret fortune under each numbered flap.
Shape and Play!
Fold in half both ways to crease, then push corners together and put thumbs and forefingers into the four pockets. Open and close to reveal fortunes!
What You’ll Create
Make the most iconic paper toy in the world — the origami fortune teller! 🔮 By folding a single sheet of paper, you create a four-fingered paper puzzle that holds eight secret fortunes. Decorate it with markers and colouring pencils, then use it to ‘predict’ what will happen to your friends. This is a classic that kids have been making and playing with for generations, and once you know how to fold one you will never forget.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Make a Square
Start with a sheet of paper. Fold one corner diagonally across until two edges line up perfectly, creating a triangle. Crease firmly along the fold. Fold the flap of paper below the triangle back, crease it, then tear or cut it away. When you unfold the triangle you will have a perfect square. This is your starting piece.
Step 2: Fold the Corners In
Lay the square flat. Fold each of the four corners into the centre point of the square — one at a time, pressing each crease firmly. You should now have a smaller square with four triangular flaps. The paper will look like an envelope.
Step 3: Flip and Fold Again
Flip the whole square over. You will see four plain square sections. Fold each of these four corners into the centre point again, exactly as before. Press each crease firmly. You now have an even smaller square with four small flaps on the front.
Step 4: Decorate It
Keep the paper folded. On the four outer flaps (the ones facing you), write a different colour on each one using markers — for example: red, blue, green, yellow. Flip the fortune teller over. You will see eight small triangles — write a number from 1 to 8 on each one. Lift each numbered flap and write a fortune underneath in tiny writing using colouring pencils — eight fortunes total, one under each number.
Step 5: Shape and Play!
Fold the fortune teller in half, then unfold it. Fold in half the other way, then unfold. Now pinch all four corners together from underneath so the four coloured flaps come up like petals. Poke your thumbs and forefingers into the four pockets to open and close it. Ask a friend to pick a colour — spell it out while opening and closing. Then pick a number — count it out. Then pick another number — lift the flap and read their fortune! 🎉
Have fun!
- 🌟 Write silly fortunes, kind fortunes, or challenges like ‘do ten star jumps’.
- 🎨 Decorate the outside with patterns, stars, and swirls for extra flair.
- 🔢 Try a maths version — write sums instead of fortunes and use it as a quiz.
- 🤝 Make one for a friend and swap so you each have a fortune teller made by the other.
Why It’s Amazing
- Geometry: Every fold creates lines of symmetry and demonstrates how a flat shape transforms into a 3D object through careful manipulation. 📐
- Following Instructions: Multi-step origami builds the skill of reading and executing a sequence — the same skill used in coding, cooking, and building. 📋
- Social Play: The fortune teller is inherently social — it requires someone to play with, building conversation and connection. 🤝
- Fine Motor Skills: Precise folding and crisp creasing develops hand control and dexterity in a way that feels like play, not exercise. ✍️
Pro Tips
For ages 5–7: Use a large piece of paper (A3 if available) for easier folding. Help with steps 1 and 5, which are the trickiest. Let them choose all the colours and write the fortunes themselves.
For ages 7–10: Encourage complete independence. Challenge them to teach a sibling or parent how to make one — explaining the steps out loud deepens their own understanding.
For ages 10+: Try a themed fortune teller — a film quiz, a maths game, or a language-learning version with words in another language. 🌍
