Newspaper Seedling Pots

Fold newspaper pages into biodegradable plant pots, fill with soil, plant seeds, and watch them grow โ€” then plant the whole pot in the garden!

Ages 3-12 0-1 hours Education 8/10

Materials

  • Baking Tray
  • Bean Seeds
  • Glass Jar
  • Newspaper
  • Water

Illustrated Steps

1

Fold the Pot Shape

Fold newspaper in half. Roll it tightly around a glass jar, leaving overhang at the bottom.

2

Form the Base

Fold the overhanging newspaper inward to create a flat base. Slide the jar out โ€” your pot stands!

3

Fill and Plant

Fill pots with soil, poke a hole, drop in a bean seed, and cover. Water gently.

4

Watch Them Grow

Place by a sunny window and water regularly. Green shoots appear in about a week!

What You’ll Create

Grow something amazing! ๐ŸŒฑ Your young gardeners will learn to fold newspaper pages into sturdy little plant pots, fill them with soil, and plant bean seeds inside. The magic? When the seedlings are big enough, you plant the entire pot in the ground โ€” the newspaper breaks down naturally in the soil! It’s crafting, science, and gardening all in one brilliant activity.

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Fold the Pot Shape

Take a full sheet of newspaper and fold it in half lengthwise. Place a glass jar on its side at one end โ€” the jar is your mould! Roll the newspaper tightly around the jar, leaving about 5cm overhanging the bottom. ๐Ÿ“ฐ

Step 2: Form the Base

Fold the overhanging newspaper ends inward, tucking them over each other to create a flat base โ€” like wrapping a present. Press it flat firmly. Carefully slide the jar out. You now have a newspaper pot that stands up on its own! Repeat to make several pots. ๐Ÿบ

Step 3: Fill and Plant

Stand your newspaper pots in a baking tray (to catch water). Fill each pot with soil or compost. Poke a hole about 2cm deep with your finger and drop in a bean seed. Cover with soil and give it a gentle sprinkle of water. ๐ŸŒฑ

Step 4: Watch Them Grow

Place your tray near a sunny window. Water gently every day or two โ€” keep the soil moist but not soaked. In about a week you’ll see green shoots poking through! When the seedlings are a few centimetres tall, plant the whole pot directly into the garden. ๐ŸŒฟ

Have fun!

  • ๐Ÿ“ Measure your seedlings every day and make a growth chart!
  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ Make little plant labels from popsicle sticks and markers!
  • ๐Ÿงช Experiment โ€” does a pot by the window grow faster than one in a cupboard?
  • ๐ŸŒป Try different seeds โ€” cress, sunflower, or lettuce!

Why It’s Amazing

  • Plant Science: Children witness the complete germination process โ€” from seed to sprout โ€” and learn what plants need to grow (water, warmth, light). ๐Ÿ”ฌ

  • Sustainability: Making pots from newspaper teaches upcycling and biodegradability โ€” the pot returns to the earth! A tangible lesson in environmental responsibility. โ™ป๏ธ

  • Patience and Responsibility: Daily watering and waiting for growth teaches patience, routine care, and the reward of nurturing something living. ๐Ÿง

  • Origami Skills: The folding technique builds spatial reasoning and fine motor skills โ€” each fold must be precise for the pot to hold its shape. โœ‹

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“5: Pre-fold the pots (the folding is tricky for small hands). Let them fill with soil and plant the seeds โ€” getting hands dirty is the best part! Use fast-growing cress seeds for quicker results (sprouts in 3โ€“4 days).

For ages 5โ€“8: Show them the folding technique step by step. Bean seeds are perfect โ€” they’re big enough for small fingers and sprout dramatically. Start a growth diary with drawings of the plant each day.

For ages 8โ€“12: Challenge them to master the folding independently and make pots of different sizes. Set up a proper experiment โ€” same seeds, different conditions (light vs dark, warm vs cool, watered vs dry). Record and graph the results.

Secret Pro Move: Double-layer the newspaper by using two sheets together โ€” the pot will be much sturdier and hold its shape better while the seedling grows. It still biodegrades perfectly when planted! ๐ŸŽฏ
