Jam Jar Lantern
Cover a glass jar in colourful tissue paper and PVA glue to create a stunning stained-glass lantern that glows with gorgeous colour when the light shines through!
Materials
- Flat Paintbrush
- Glass Jar
- PVA Glue
- Tissue Paper
Illustrated Steps
Tear the Tissue Paper
Tear tissue paper into small irregular pieces, roughly postage-stamp sized. Prepare a pile of at least three different colours.
Paint and Apply Tissue
Brush thinned PVA glue on a section of the jar, press a tissue piece on, then brush glue over the top. Repeat to cover the whole jar.
Seal the Lantern
Brush a final coat of PVA glue all over the outside to seal every edge. Leave upside-down to dry fully for 1–2 hours.
Light It Up!
Place a battery-powered tea light inside the finished jar, switch it on, and watch it glow with rich stained-glass colours!
What You’ll Create
Transform a plain glass jar into a glowing stained-glass lantern! 🏮 Layer torn tissue paper pieces onto the outside of the jar with PVA glue and watch the colours overlap and blend. Once dry, pop a battery-powered tea light inside and the jar glows with rich, jewel-like colour. These make beautiful gifts or centrepieces!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Tear the Tissue Paper
Tear your tissue paper into small irregular pieces — roughly the size of a large postage stamp or a bit bigger. Irregular edges look much better than straight cuts because they overlap naturally and hide the joins. Make a pile of at least three different colours so you can layer them. The more colours you use, the richer the finished lantern will look. 🌈
Step 2: Paint the Jar and Apply Tissue
Squirt a small pool of PVA glue onto a flat surface and thin it slightly with a few drops of water. Using a flat paintbrush, paint a section of the outside of the jar with the glue — work on a patch about 5 cm wide at a time so it does not dry before you place the tissue. Press a tissue paper piece onto the wet glue, then brush more glue on top of it to seal it down flat. Repeat, overlapping pieces and mixing colours freely. Cover the entire outside of the jar.
Step 3: Seal the Lantern
Once the jar is fully covered in tissue paper, brush a final even coat of PVA glue all over the outside to seal all the edges. Wipe any drips from the inside rim. Leave the jar upside-down on a piece of baking paper to dry fully — this usually takes 1–2 hours. The glue will dry clear, locking the tissue paper in place.
Step 4: Light It Up!
When completely dry, place a battery-powered tea light inside the jar and switch it on. Turn off the lights and watch the jar glow with stained-glass colours! 🌟 Display it on a windowsill or use it as a centrepiece.
Have fun!
- 🎨 Try a theme: all warm reds and oranges for a sunset lantern, or cool blues and greens for an ocean lantern.
- 🎁 These make beautiful gifts — wrap in tissue paper and tie with ribbon.
- 🌙 Make a row of different-sized jars for a magical glowing display.
- 🖌️ Use just two colours and deliberately overlap them to create a third colour in between.
Why It’s Amazing
- Colour Theory: Overlapping transparent tissue colours creates new mixed colours — a vivid lesson in how colours combine. 🎨
- Fine Motor Skills: Tearing, positioning, and brushing tiny tissue pieces develops precision and patience. ✋
- Creativity: Designing the colour arrangement and pattern encourages aesthetic thinking and artistic decision-making. 🌈
- Science: Seeing how light passes through the transparent tissue introduces the concept of light transmission and opacity. 💡
Pro Tips
For ages 4–5: Pre-thin the glue and let them brush it on freely. Don’t worry about a pattern — random looks gorgeous!
For ages 5–8: Encourage a deliberate colour plan. Can they make stripes, a rainbow, or a repeated pattern of shapes?
For ages 8+: Try cutting tissue into geometric shapes — diamonds, triangles — and arrange them deliberately like a real stained-glass window. Add a black paper strip border around the top and bottom for extra drama. 🏛️
