What You’ll Create
The most exciting adventure park your child has ever seen โ right in your living room! ๐ Using cardboard boxes, tape, and cardboard tubes, you’ll transform everyday furniture and floor space into a series of physical challenges: a crawl-through tunnel, a balance beam, a limbo bar, and a racing finish line.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Plan the Course Stations
Walk around your space and plan 5โ6 stations: an open-ended cardboard box as a crawl-through tunnel, squares of paper taped to the floor as stepping stones, a cardboard tube propped as a limbo bar, a strip of tape as a balance beam, and a tape finish line stretched across a doorway.
Step 2: Build and Mark the Track
Use tape to stick bold arrows on the floor showing the route between stations. Open a large cardboard box flat and roll it into a tunnel shape. Prop a cardboard tube between two stacks of books for the limbo bar. Mark the START and FINISH with tape strips.
Step 3: Race the Clock
Give your child a practice lap to learn the route, then start timing! Call out encouragement at each station. Each successful lap earns a sticker on their personal score chart. Challenge them to beat their own best time each round โ personal bests only!
Have fun!
- ๐ Award gold, silver, and bronze sticker medals for the three fastest times
- ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Have grown-ups attempt the course too โ children love watching adults struggle with the limbo!
- ๐ Add a lava floor rule โ step off the tape path and restart that station
- ๐ต Play upbeat music and challenge them to finish before the song ends
Why It’s Amazing
- Gross Motor Skills: Crawling, jumping, balancing, and ducking develop strength and whole-body coordination. ๐
- Spatial Awareness: Navigating a course builds body awareness and spatial judgement under time pressure. ๐ง
- Confidence: Completing each challenge and smashing their personal best builds genuine self-belief. ๐ช
- Physical Literacy: Early movement play builds a lifelong love of activity and healthy habits. ๐
Pro Tips
For ages 2โ3: Remove the timer entirely โ focus on exploration and fun. Cheer loudly for every single station completed!
For ages 4โ5: Introduce the timer and let them self-time with a simple stopwatch. Set a star challenge โ can you complete three laps without knocking the limbo bar?
Soft cushions and pillows work brilliantly as hurdles โ completely safe to trip over and enormous fun to jump across!
