Ice Excavation Adventure
Freeze coins inside a glittering block of coloured ice, then use salt and warm water to melt it away and unearth the buried treasure!
Materials
- Coins
- Food Colouring
- Salt
- Small Containers
- Spoon
Illustrated Steps
Freeze the Treasure
Fill a container with coloured water, drop in coins at different depths, and freeze overnight until completely solid.
Unmould Your Ice Block
Run cold water over the outside of the container to loosen it, then tip it upside down until the ice block slides out.
Excavate with Salt and Water
Sprinkle salt all over the ice and trickle warm water with a spoon. Watch channels melt through the block, revealing the coins inside.
Count Your Loot
As coins break free, collect and rinse them. Once all the ice has melted, count up your rescued treasure haul!
What You’ll Create
Become a fearless ice archaeologist! ๐ง You’ll freeze coins inside a sparkling block of coloured ice, then use salt, warm water, and detective skills to melt it away and rescue the buried treasure. Watch as the ice slowly crumbles and the golden loot appears โ it’s science and adventure all at once!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Freeze the Treasure
Half-fill a small container (a lunchbox or plastic tub works perfectly) with water. Add a few drops of food colouring and stir until the water is a vivid colour. Drop several coins into the coloured water โ push them to different depths so they’re scattered through the ice block. Place the container in the freezer and leave overnight, or for at least 6 hours, until completely solid.
Step 2: Unmould Your Ice Block
Run cold water over the outside of the container for about 30 seconds to loosen the ice from the sides. Hold the container upside down over a shallow tray or plastic box and give it a gentle shake โ the ice block should slide out in one piece. You should be able to see the coins trapped inside! โจ
Step 3: Excavate with Salt and Water
Place the ice block on the tray. Sprinkle a generous layer of salt all over the ice โ salt lowers the freezing point of water and melts ice surprisingly fast! Use a spoon to trickle small amounts of warm water over specific spots. Watch as channels and holes appear in the ice, slowly freeing your treasure. Keep adding salt and water until all the coins work loose.
Step 4: Count Your Loot
As coins work their way free, pick them out and rinse them under the tap. When all the ice has melted, dry your coins and count up your treasure haul! How much did you excavate? ๐ช
Have fun!
- ๐จ Add different colours to two containers and layer them to make a rainbow ice block.
- ๐ Try hiding other small waterproof objects alongside the coins.
- โฑ๏ธ Time how long it takes โ does more salt make it faster?
- ๐งช Set up a comparison: one block treated with salt, one left alone. Which melts first?
Why It’s Amazing
- Science Skills: Children see exactly how salt lowers the freezing point of water โ the same reason we grit icy roads in winter. ๐ฌ
- Sensory Play: The cold, wet, crystalline textures stimulate curiosity and rich sensory exploration. ๐ง
- Patience and Persistence: Waiting for the treasure to appear builds self-regulation and the joy of delayed gratification. โณ
- Numeracy: Counting and sorting the rescued coins introduces early number skills in a meaningful, exciting context. ๐ช
Pro Tips
For ages 3โ4: Keep the ice block small and thin so it melts within 20 minutes โ little ones lose interest if the wait is too long. Use bigger coins that are easy to spot.
For ages 4โ6: Encourage predictions: “How many coins do you think are inside?” then count at the end. Introduce words like melt, freeze, and temperature.
For ages 6+: Add a scientific twist โ have them record the melting time with and without salt and discuss the results like a real scientist. โ๏ธ
