Giant's Stomping Stilts

Transform empty tin cans into walking stilts with string handles, then stomp around like a fee-fi-fo-fum giant towering above the world!

Ages 3-10 0-1 hours Education 5/10

Materials

  • Poster Paint optional
  • Scissors
  • Stickers optional
  • String
  • Tin Cans

Illustrated Steps

1

Prepare Your Giant's Boots

Clean two large tin cans and check for sharp edges. Turn them upside down so the solid closed end faces up.

2

Thread the Magic Handles

Punch two holes on opposite sides of each can. Thread string through and tie knots inside so they reach up to waist height.

3

Decorate Your Stompers

Paint the cans in bold colours and add stickers or patterns. Let them dry completely before stomping!

4

Learn to Stomp!

Step onto the cans and hold the string handles taut. Take small steps, lifting each foot while pulling the string up.

What You’ll Create

Fee-fi-fo-fum! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Your little giants are about to grow TALLER with their very own stomping stilts! Transform two empty tin cans and some string into magical height-boosting stompers. Decorate them like giant’s boots, learn to balance and walk, then stomp around the garden or hallway making the most satisfying CLANK CLANK CLANK sounds. It’s the ultimate big-kid power-up!

Have fun!

  • ๐Ÿฐ Set up a “giant’s obstacle course” with cushions and boxes to stomp over!
  • ๐Ÿ Race a friend โ€” first giant to the finish line wins!
  • ๐ŸŽต Stomp to music and create a giant’s marching band!
  • ๐Ÿ“ Measure how much taller you are on stilts versus without!

Why It’s Amazing

  • Balance & Coordination: Walking on stilts requires core balance, bilateral coordination, and whole-body motor planning โ€” brilliant physical development! ๐Ÿคธ

  • Problem Solving: Learning the lift-pull-step rhythm takes practice and self-correction โ€” kids naturally iterate until they find what works. ๐Ÿง

  • Creative Expression: Decorating the stilts and creating a giant character encourages imaginative storytelling and role play. ๐ŸŽญ

  • Confidence Building: Mastering a challenging physical skill builds resilience and self-confidence โ€” “I couldn’t do it, but now I CAN!” ๐Ÿ’ช

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“5: Hold their hand while they learn to balance. Use shorter string so they have more control. Start on soft ground (grass or carpet) for safer practice.

For ages 5โ€“8: Let them practise independently on flat ground. Challenge them to walk a straight line, then a curve, then around obstacles.

For ages 8โ€“12: Make it competitive โ€” time trials, relay races, or obstacle courses. Challenge them to walk on different surfaces and notice how the sound changes.

Secret Pro Move: Put a few dried beans inside each can before sealing the top with tape โ€” your stilts become NOISY SHAKER STILTS that make a rattling maraca sound with every step! ๐ŸŽถ
