Illustrated Steps
Prepare Your Giant's Boots
Clean two large tin cans and check for sharp edges. Turn them upside down so the solid closed end faces up.
Thread the Magic Handles
Punch two holes on opposite sides of each can. Thread string through and tie knots inside so they reach up to waist height.
Decorate Your Stompers
Paint the cans in bold colours and add stickers or patterns. Let them dry completely before stomping!
Learn to Stomp!
Step onto the cans and hold the string handles taut. Take small steps, lifting each foot while pulling the string up.
What You’ll Create
Fee-fi-fo-fum! ๐ฐ๐ฃ Your little giants are about to grow TALLER with their very own stomping stilts! Transform two empty tin cans and some string into magical height-boosting stompers. Decorate them like giant’s boots, learn to balance and walk, then stomp around the garden or hallway making the most satisfying CLANK CLANK CLANK sounds. It’s the ultimate big-kid power-up!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Prepare Your Giant’s Boots
โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed โ Take two large tin cans (baked bean or soup tins work best) and make sure they’re clean and completely dry. Check there are NO sharp edges around the rim โ run tape over the opened end if needed. Turn them upside down so the solid closed end faces up โ this is what you’ll stand on!
Step 2: Thread the Magic Handles
โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed โ Using a nail and hammer (or a strong screwdriver), punch two holes on opposite sides of each can, near the closed (top) end. Cut two pieces of string, each about 1.5 metres long. Thread one string through each can’s holes and tie big knots inside so they can’t pull through. The string loops become your handles โ they should reach up to your waist when you’re standing on the cans.
Step 3: Decorate Your Stompers
Now make them look like real giant’s boots! Use poster paint to paint the cans in bold colours โ gold for a royal giant, green for a forest troll, silver for a robot! Add stickers, stripes, or patterns. Let the paint dry completely before stomping. ๐จ
Step 4: Learn to Stomp!
Step onto the upturned cans (one foot on each) and hold the string handles taut by pulling them up with your hands. Keep the strings tight โ this is what gives you balance! Take small steps at first, lifting each foot and pulling the string at the same time. Once you’ve got the rhythm: STOMP STOMP STOMP around like the biggest giant in the land! ๐ฃ๐ฅ
Have fun!
- ๐ฐ Set up a “giant’s obstacle course” with cushions and boxes to stomp over!
- ๐ Race a friend โ first giant to the finish line wins!
- ๐ต Stomp to music and create a giant’s marching band!
- ๐ Measure how much taller you are on stilts versus without!
Why It’s Amazing
Balance & Coordination: Walking on stilts requires core balance, bilateral coordination, and whole-body motor planning โ brilliant physical development! ๐คธ
Problem Solving: Learning the lift-pull-step rhythm takes practice and self-correction โ kids naturally iterate until they find what works. ๐ง
Creative Expression: Decorating the stilts and creating a giant character encourages imaginative storytelling and role play. ๐ญ
Confidence Building: Mastering a challenging physical skill builds resilience and self-confidence โ “I couldn’t do it, but now I CAN!” ๐ช
Pro Tips
For ages 3โ5: Hold their hand while they learn to balance. Use shorter string so they have more control. Start on soft ground (grass or carpet) for safer practice.
For ages 5โ8: Let them practise independently on flat ground. Challenge them to walk a straight line, then a curve, then around obstacles.
For ages 8โ12: Make it competitive โ time trials, relay races, or obstacle courses. Challenge them to walk on different surfaces and notice how the sound changes.
Secret Pro Move: Put a few dried beans inside each can before sealing the top with tape โ your stilts become NOISY SHAKER STILTS that make a rattling maraca sound with every step! ๐ถ
