Giant Bubble Wands

Twist pipe cleaners into wand loops, mix a simple bubble solution, and blow stretchy, wobbling bubbles โ€” then make a giant wand and wave enormous bubbles into the air!

Ages 3-6 0-1 hours Education 6/10

Materials

  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Small Containers
  • Spoon
  • Washing-up Liquid
  • Water

Illustrated Steps

1

Mix the Bubble Solution

Pour water into a shallow container and add 4โ€“5 squirts of washing-up liquid. Stir gently โ€” no froth โ€” then leave to rest for 5 minutes.

2

Shape Your Wand

Bend one end of a pipe cleaner into a 4 cm circle and wrap the free end around the base twice to lock it. Straighten the rest as a handle.

3

Dip and Blow

Dip the loop into the solution and lift slowly so a film stretches across it. Blow a long, steady breath to grow a bubble and release it.

4

Make a Giant Wand!

Join 2โ€“3 pipe cleaners to make a long wire, bend a huge 10 cm loop, and wave it slowly through the air to launch enormous bubbles!

What You’ll Create

Build your own magical bubble wands and create the most spectacular bubbles you have ever seen! ๐Ÿซง Twist pipe cleaners into any loop shape you like โ€” round, star-shaped, or enormous โ€” dip them into a homemade bubble solution, and blow gently to launch shimmering, rainbow-coloured bubbles. The bigger your loop, the bigger your bubble!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Mix the Bubble Solution

Pour about 200 ml of water into a small container (a shallow bowl or tray works best). Add 4โ€“5 generous squirts of washing-up liquid and stir very gently with a spoon โ€” you want it mixed but not frothy. For stronger, longer-lasting bubbles, leave the solution to rest for 5 minutes before using it.

Step 2: Shape Your Wand

Take one pipe cleaner and bend one end into a circle about 4 cm across. Wrap the free end around the base of the circle twice to secure it, then straighten the remaining pipe cleaner to form a handle. Squeeze the loop gently to make it as round as possible. This is your bubble wand!

Step 3: Dip and Blow

Dip the loop end of your wand into the solution and lift it out slowly so a film of liquid stretches across the loop. Hold it up in front of your mouth and blow very gently and steadily โ€” not a sharp puff, but a long, slow breath. A bubble will grow from the loop and float free! Try blowing faster for small bubbles and slower for giant ones. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Step 4: Make a Giant Wand!

Twist two or three pipe cleaners end-to-end to make a longer wire, then bend a much bigger loop โ€” 10 cm or more across. Dip it in the solution, lift slowly, and wave it gently through the air instead of blowing. Watch an enormous bubble form and drift away! ๐ŸŒŸ

Have fun!

  • ๐ŸŒˆ Hold a bubble up to the light โ€” can you see all the colours of the rainbow swirling on its surface?
  • ๐Ÿซง Try blowing two bubbles and gently touching them together โ€” what shape do they make where they meet?
  • โฑ๏ธ Time how long your bubbles float before popping.
  • โ„๏ธ On a cold day, try blowing bubbles outdoors โ€” they sometimes freeze into icy spheres!

Why It’s Amazing

  • Science: Children learn about surface tension โ€” the stretchy, elastic-like skin that holds a bubble together. ๐Ÿ”ฌ
  • Maths: Making bigger loops to produce bigger bubbles teaches the relationship between size and scale. ๐Ÿ“
  • Fine Motor Skills: Twisting the pipe cleaner loop and controlling the blowing force both develop precise muscle control. โœ‹
  • Curiosity: The iridescent colours on a bubble’s surface are a beautiful introduction to light and optics. ๐ŸŒˆ

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“4: Pre-make the wands for them. Let them focus purely on dipping and blowing โ€” even if the bubble pops immediately, they will love it!

For ages 4โ€“6: Let them shape their own wands โ€” try hearts, squares, or triangles. Does the bubble shape change?

For ages 6+: Experiment with the solution recipe โ€” try adding a tiny spoon of glycerine (from the pharmacy) to see if it makes stronger, longer-lasting bubbles. Write down what works best. ๐Ÿงช
