Materials

  • Cotton Wool
  • Food Colouring
  • Glass Jar
  • Glitter
  • Spoon
  • Tape optional
  • Water

Illustrated Steps

1

Prepare Your Cosmic Colours

Mix food colouring into small cups of water. Use purple, blue, and pink for a classic galaxy look. Stir well.

2

Create the First Layer

Fluff up some cotton wool balls and push them into the bottom of the jar to create a thick, cloudy base.

3

Sprinkle Some Stardust

Shake plenty of glitter over the cotton wool and press it against the glass so it's visible.

4

Pour the Nebula

Carefully pour one of your coloured water mixtures over the cotton wool until it's fully soaked.

5

Repeat the Layers

Add more cotton wool, glitter, and different colours of water in layers until the jar is full.

6

Seal Your Galaxy

Screw the lid on tightly. You can use tape around the rim for extra security. Tilt gently to see the nebula swirl.

What You’ll Create

You’re about to become a cosmic creator! ✨ By layering soft cotton wool, sparkling glitter, and brilliant food colouring, you’ll trap a miniature swirling galaxy inside a glass jar. It looks just like a real nebula deep in outer space! This isn’t just a craft — it’s a beautiful, calming sensory jar that you can keep on your windowsill to remind you of the stars. 🌌

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Prepare Your Cosmic Colours

Fill three small cups with water. Add 2–3 drops of different food colouring to each cup — purple, blue, and pink work best for a classic galaxy look! Give each one a quick stir with a spoon. 🎨

Step 2: Create the First Layer

Take your glass jar and stretch out a few balls of cotton wool so they are fluffy. Push them into the bottom of the jar until they cover the base. You want a thick, fluffy layer of ‘space clouds’! ☁️

Step 3: Sprinkle Some Stardust

Shake a generous amount of glitter over the cotton wool. This is your stardust! Use the spoon to gently press the glitter into the edges of the cotton so it’s visible through the glass. ✨

Step 4: Pour the Nebula

Carefully pour one of your coloured water mixtures over the cotton wool. Watch as the wool soaks up the colour and the glitter starts to sparkle through the ‘clouds’. Don’t fill it up — just enough to soak that layer! 💧

Step 5: Repeat the Layers

Add another fluffy layer of cotton wool, more glitter, and then your next colour of water. Repeat this layering process until the jar is full. The different colours will swirl together where they meet, creating a beautiful nebula effect! 🌌

Step 6: Seal Your Galaxy

Once the jar is full to the top, screw the lid on tightly. You can add a little bit of tape around the lid to make sure it’s extra secure. Give the jar a very gentle tilt (don’t shake it!) to see the cosmic colours blend together. 🏺

Have fun!

  • 🌟 Place your jar in a sunny window and watch the stardust catch the light.
  • 🚀 Use it as a prop for your next space-themed story or pretend mission to Mars.
  • 🧘 Use it as a ‘calm-down jar’ — watching the swirling nebula can be very relaxing.

Why It’s Amazing

  • Sensory Engagement: Exploring textures like fluffy cotton and liquid water creates a rich sensory experience. ✨
  • Colour Mixing: Children observe how different liquid colours blend and transition within a solid medium. 🎨
  • Fine Motor Skills: Stretching cotton wool and carefully pouring liquids develops hand control and precision. ✋
  • Patience and Focus: Building the layers section by section encourages steady, mindful work. 🧠

Pro Tips

For ages 3–5: They will love stretching the ‘cloud’ cotton wool! Help them with the pouring to avoid spills.

For ages 5–8: Encourage them to experiment with the amount of glitter — can they create a ‘star-dense’ region of space?

For ages 8–12: Challenge them to create a specific ’theme’ — like a ‘Fiery Supernova’ with reds and oranges, or a ‘Deep Sea Galaxy’ with greens and teals.

Secret Pro Move: Use a flashlight to shine light through the bottom of the jar in the dark — your galaxy will truly come to life! 🔦
