Ancient Metallic Artefacts
Craft stunning, museum-worthy 'metal' relics using cardboard, string, and the magical technique of foil embossing!
Materials
- Aluminium Foil
- Cardboard Boxes
- Markers optional
- PVA Glue
- Spoon
- String
Illustrated Steps
Design the Relic Base
Glue cardboard shapes and curled string onto a solid cardboard backing to create a raised pattern.
Lay the Silver Canvas
Cover the entire design with a large sheet of aluminium foil, folding the edges tightly around the back.
Emboss the Metal
Gently rub the foil with the back of a spoon to reveal the hidden 3D shapes underneath!
Add the Ancient Weathering
Scribble black marker into the cracks and quickly wipe it away to create a shadowed, antique look.
What You’ll Create
You will step into the shoes of a master metalsmith! ๐ก๏ธ By layering simple cardboard shapes and string under a sheet of kitchen foil, you will use the technique of ’embossing’ to reveal a breathtaking 3D metallic shield, ancient coin, or royal crest that looks like it belongs in a museum.
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Design the Relic Base
Cut a large shield or circle out of a thick Cardboard Box to act as your base. Use Scissors to cut smaller shapes (stars, lightning bolts) out of thinner cardboard. Glue these shapes, along with curled pieces of String, onto your base to create a complex raised pattern.
Step 2: Lay the Silver Canvas
Once the glue is dry, tear off a piece of Aluminium Foil that is larger than your entire cardboard base. Gently lay it over your design with the shiniest side facing UP, carefully folding the extra foil around the back of the cardboard and securing it with Tape.
Step 3: Emboss the Metal
This is where the magic happens! Take the back of a smooth Spoon (or your thumb) and very gently rub the foil over the raised areas. Watch in amazement as the foil presses into the gaps, making your cardboard and string design pop out as a 3D metal sculpture! โจ
Step 4: Add the Ancient Weathering
To make your artefact look truly ancient, take a black Marker and scribble lightly over the deepest parts of your embossed design. Immediately wipe it with a tissue so the ink only stays in the cracks. This adds incredible ‘weathered’ shadows!
Have fun!
- โ๏ธ Create a full set of knight’s armour, complete with a crest and metallic gauntlets.
- ๐๏ธ Host a ‘museum exhibition’ in your living room and make up stories about where your artefacts were discovered.
- ๐ค Try writing your name in raised string before covering it in foil for a personalised metal door sign.
Why It’s Amazing
- Sensory Exploration: The transition from flat foil to a highly textured, bumpy 3D surface is a brilliant tactile experience. ๐คฒ
- Fine Motor Control: Gently rubbing the foil without tearing it requires incredible focus and pressure regulation.
- Creative Chemistry: Learning how to add ‘patina’ with a marker teaches kids about shadows, depth, and contrast in art. ๐จ
Pro Tips
โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed โ Cardboard boxes can be tough to cut. An adult should help with the heavy cutting for the base. If the foil tears slightly while rubbing, don’t panic! It just makes the artefact look more authentic and battle-worn.
