Fizzy Fossil Dig

Bury tiny dinosaurs in baking-soda rocks, then spray vinegar to watch them fizz and crumble — revealing the fossils inside!

Mix the Fossil Dough

Combine baking soda with water and food colouring in a bowl until it holds together like damp sand.

Bury the Dinosaurs

Press dough flat, place a small figurine in the centre, and pack it tightly into a rock shape.

Harden the Fossils

Leave fossil rocks on a tray to dry overnight, or bake at the lowest oven setting for about an hour.

Excavate with Fizzy Vinegar

Spray or drip vinegar onto the hardened rocks and watch them fizz, bubble, and crumble to reveal the hidden dinosaurs!

Pro Tips

For ages 5–8: Let them mix the dough and bury the toys themselves. Encourage them to make their rocks different shapes — flat “slate” fossils, round “boulders”, and egg shapes.

For ages 8–12: Challenge them to excavate as carefully as possible without touching the figurine with their fingers — just like a real dig! They can also experiment with the dough recipe (more or less water) and observe how it affects the fizzing speed.
