How to Set It Up

Step 1: Mix the Fossil Dough

Pour about 2 cups of baking soda into a large bowl. Add a few drops of food colouring — sandy brown or grey works brilliantly for a realistic rock look! 🎨 Slowly drizzle in water, about 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring with a spoon after each addition. Keep going until the mixture holds together like damp sand when you squeeze it. You’ll need roughly 4–6 tablespoons of water total. If it gets too wet, sprinkle in more baking soda.

Step 2: Bury the Dinosaurs

Grab a handful of your fossil dough and press it flat in your palm. Place a small plastic figurine in the centre 🦕 — a dinosaur, insect, or any small toy works perfectly! Fold the dough around the figurine and pack it tightly into a ball or rock shape, making sure the toy is completely hidden inside. Repeat until you’ve used up all your dough and buried all your creatures. Place each fossil rock onto a baking tray or plate.

Step 3: Harden the Fossils

Leave your fossil rocks on the tray to dry and harden. For best results, let them sit overnight — or at least 4–6 hours. Step 4: Excavate with Fizzy Vinegar
