DIY Rainstick
Craft a beautifully decorated rainstick from a cardboard tube that sounds just like a real gentle rainstorm!
Materials
- Aluminium Foil
- Cardboard Tubes
- Markers optional
- Tape
- Uncooked Rice
Illustrated Steps
Seal One End
Trace the tube end on paper, cut it out, and tape it securely over the bottom of the tube.
Create the Foil Maze
Twist a long sheet of foil into a snake, coil it into a spring, and push it into the tube.
Add the Rain
Pour a handful of uncooked rice into the open end. Tip it to test the sound!
Seal and Decorate
Seal the top end tightly with tape and paper, then decorate the outside with markers.
What You’ll Create
Turn an ordinary tube into a magical musical instrument! By combining a Cardboard Tube, spiralled Aluminium Foil, and Uncooked Rice, you and your child will engineer a DIY Rainstick. When you tip it over, the rice cascades through the foil maze, creating the soothing, realistic sound of falling rain. ๐ง๏ธ๐ถ
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Seal One End
Take your Cardboard Tube (a long paper towel tube works best) and trace its end onto a piece of paper. Cut out the circle, leaving a wide margin, and use Tape to securely seal one end of the tube so nothing can escape.
Step 2: Create the Foil Maze
Tear off a long sheet of Aluminium Foil. Twist and scrunch it into a long snake, then coil it into a spring or spiral shape. Drop this foil spring inside the tubeโit should fill most of the length.
Step 3: Add the Rain
Pour a small handful of Uncooked Rice into the open end of the tube. Cover the open end with your hand and tip it over to test the sound. Add more rice if needed until you get the perfect rain noise!
Step 4: Seal and Decorate
Seal the top end just like you did the bottom with paper and tape. Now, grab your Markers and decorate the outside of the stick with raindrops, clouds, or vibrant tribal patterns!
Have fun!
- โ Close your eyes, tip the stick slowly, and imagine a gentle spring shower.
- โ๏ธ Tip it fast to create the sound of a heavy thunderstorm!
- ๐ฅ Use it as a percussion instrument and shake it along to your favourite songs.
- ๐ค Put on a weather-themed concert for the whole family.
Why It’s Amazing
- Auditory Sensory Play: The soothing sound helps calm the nervous system and develops listening skills. ๐
- Engineering & Physics: Kids learn how physical obstacles (the foil) slow down gravity (the falling rice). ๐
- Fine Motor Skills: Scrunching foil, taping, and drawing all build hand dexterity. ๐๏ธ
- Cultural Connection: A great way to introduce the history of rainsticks in indigenous cultures. ๐
Pro Tips
For ages 3-5: You handle the sealing and pouring; let them do the foil scrunching and the decorating. They will love the sensory feel of the foil!
For ages 5-8: Experiment with different fillingsโtry small pasta, lentils, or beads alongside the rice to see how the pitch of the ‘rain’ changes.
For ages 8-12: Challenge them to design a complex internal maze using toothpicks pushed through the sides of the cardboard tube instead of foil (โ ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed).
