Cotton Wool Rainbow

What You’ll Create

Chase the rainbow! 🌈 Your little artists will create a gorgeously fluffy rainbow by gluing tinted cotton wool along drawn arcs on paper. Draw the rainbow bands, pull cotton wool into strips, dip or dab them in coloured poster paint, then press them onto the arcs. The result is a wonderfully soft, textured rainbow that’s as lovely to touch as it is to look at!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Draw the Rainbow

Using a marker, draw 5–7 large curved arcs on a sheet of paper — one inside the other, like a real rainbow. Space them apart enough to fit cotton wool strips. Start from the outside: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, then purple on the inside. 🌈

Step 2: Tint the Cotton Wool

Pull cotton wool apart into flat, wispy strips. For each colour, squeeze a small amount of poster paint onto a plate or tray, then gently press the cotton wool into the paint to tint it. Don’t soak it — just enough colour to stain the white fluffy fibres. ⚠️ This gets messy — cover the table first! 🎨

Step 3: Glue the Arcs

Spread PVA glue along one arc at a time. Press the tinted cotton wool strip onto the glue, following the curve. Start with the outer red arc and work inward. Layer and fluff the cotton wool as you go — the puffier, the better! ☁️

Step 4: Add Clouds and Details

Ball up some plain white cotton wool and glue fluffy clouds at each end of the rainbow. You can also add cotton wool clouds across the top. Let everything dry completely. Hang it up or prop it on a shelf — your fluffy rainbow is ready to brighten any room! ☁️

For ages 4–7: Let them draw their own arcs. Show them how to pull cotton wool into thin strips for neater arcs. Challenge them to get all 7 rainbow colours.

For ages 7–10: Research the science of rainbows and light refraction. Create a gradient effect by blending colours where they meet. Add a 3D effect by layering cotton wool thickly.

Secret Pro Move: Instead of dipping cotton wool in paint, spray it with diluted food colouring from a spray bottle — the colour distributes more evenly and keeps the cotton wool fluffier! 🎯
