Draw a chunky polar bear shape on blue paper — big body, round head, small ears, stubby legs.
Glue the Body
Spread PVA glue over the bear and press on fluffy cotton wool pieces to cover it completely.

What You’ll Create
A fluffy Arctic friend! 🐻❄️ Your little wildlife artists will draw a polar bear outline on paper, then cover it in soft, fluffy cotton wool to create a wonderfully textured, touchable polar bear picture. Add googly eyes, a felt or paper nose, and create a snowy Arctic background with more cotton wool. A gorgeous sensory art piece!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Draw the Bear Outline
On a sheet of blue paper (or paint a sheet light blue for the sky), draw a large, simple polar bear shape with a marker — a big rounded body, four stubby legs, a round head with small ears, and a short tail. Keep it chunky and simple. 🐻
Step 2: Glue the Body
Spread PVA glue generously over the bear’s body area. Pull apart cotton wool into thin, fluffy pieces and press them onto the glue, covering the entire bear shape. Build up layers for extra fluffiness — the more cotton wool, the softer and more realistic the bear looks! ☁️
Step 3: Add the Face
Stick two googly eyes on the head. Cut a small oval from black paper for the nose and glue it on. Use a marker to draw a tiny mouth line below the nose. For the ears, shape two small cotton wool circles and press them on. 🐾
Step 4: Create the Arctic Scene
Add more cotton wool along the bottom of the paper as snow on the ground. Tear small wisps and stick them floating in the sky as snowflakes. Draw some simple mountains or icebergs with a white crayon or marker in the background. Your polar bear is home! 🏔️
Have fun!
- 🌨️ Add glitter to the cotton wool snow for sparkling ice crystals!
- 🐧 Make a penguin friend from black paper to keep your bear company!
- 📖 Learn about polar bears — they’re actually black-skinned under white fur!
- 🎭 Make the bear a name tag and write fun facts about polar bears around the picture!
Why It’s Amazing
Sensory Art: The soft, touchable texture of cotton wool makes this a multi-sensory experience — art you can feel! 🧸
Arctic Ecology: Creating a habitat scene naturally leads to conversations about polar bears, Arctic life, and climate. 🌍
Fine Motor Skills: Tearing cotton wool into pieces, spreading glue, and pressing materials into place all build hand control. ✋
Texture Awareness: Working with fluffy, soft materials alongside flat paper develops tactile vocabulary and sensory processing. 🔬
Pro Tips
For ages 3–5: Pre-draw the bear outline. This is all about the gluing and cotton wool pressing — they’ll love the sensory experience of handling the fluffy cotton wool and sticking it down!
For ages 5–8: Let them draw their own bear. Show them how to layer cotton wool for extra fluffy texture. Add details like paw prints in the snow (draw circles).
For ages 8–12: Research polar bear anatomy and create a more detailed, realistic bear. Add a full Arctic scene with icebergs (white paper), northern lights (green and purple marker streaks), and other Arctic animals. Write an information card about polar bear conservation.
Secret Pro Move: Before gluing, lightly stretch and pull the cotton wool apart into a thin sheet rather than using it in clumps — this creates a smooth, realistic fur texture instead of a lumpy surface! 🎯
