Cloud Dough Sensory Play
Mix cornflour and vegetable oil to conjure magical cloud dough — it holds its shape perfectly when squeezed and crumbles like powdery snow when you let go. Endless sensory fun!
Materials
- Cornflour
- Food Colouring optional
- Large Bowl
- Spoon optional
- Vegetable Oil
Illustrated Steps
Measure the Ingredients
Pour 8 cups of cornflour into a large bowl, then measure out 1 cup of vegetable oil. This 8:1 ratio is the whole recipe — double it easily for a bigger batch. Have food colouring ready!
Mix the Dough
Pour the oil slowly into the cornflour and squish everything together with your hands. It looks crumbly at first — keep going! After about a minute it transforms into silky, mouldable cloud dough.
Add the Colour
Drop 5–8 drops of food colouring onto the dough and knead it in thoroughly until the colour spreads evenly. Fewer drops = pastel; more drops = bold and vivid. Make two batches in different colours!
Play and Explore!
Squeeze the dough into a ball — it holds! Open your hand slowly and watch it crumble apart. Press it into a bowl, tip it out, and admire the shape. Build mountains, make cakes, or just squish!
What You’ll Create
With just two kitchen ingredients, you’ll make magical cloud dough ✨ — it feels like powdery snow, holds its shape perfectly when squeezed, but crumbles apart when you open your hand. It’s one of the most satisfying sensory materials imaginable, and it takes just 2 minutes to make!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Measure the Ingredients
Pour 8 cups of cornflour into a large bowl. Then measure out 1 cup of vegetable oil. This 8:1 ratio is the whole recipe — and you can easily double it for a bigger batch. Have your food colouring ready for later!
Step 2: Mix the Dough
Pour the oil slowly into the cornflour and use your hands (or a spoon first if you prefer) to squish and press everything together. It will look dry and crumbly at first — keep going! After about a minute of squishing it will suddenly transform into silky, mouldable cloud dough.
Step 3: Add the Colour
Drop 5–8 drops of food colouring onto the surface of the dough and knead it in thoroughly until the colour spreads evenly through the whole batch. Fewer drops = pastel; more drops = bold and vivid! Make two separate batches in different colours for extra fun.
Step 4: Play and Explore!
Scoop up a handful and squeeze it into a ball — it holds perfectly! Open your hand slowly and watch it crumble apart like a little sandcastle. Press it into a bowl or cup, tip it out, and admire the perfect shape. Build mountains, make pretend cakes, or just squish it — the possibilities are endless!
Have fun!
- 🏖️ Set up a ‘cloud beach’ in a shallow tray and bury small plastic toys to dig out.
- 🎂 Create a pretend bakery: mould cloud-dough cakes, tarts, and biscuits on toy plates.
- 🎨 Mix two colours together gently and watch them swirl before fully combining.
- ⭐ Press cookie cutters into the surface to make perfect shape impressions.
Why It’s Amazing
- Sensory Development: The unique texture — cool, powdery, and mouldable — gives rich tactile input that supports sensory processing and self-regulation. 🤲
- Early Science: Children observe how oil and powder combine to create a new material with surprising properties — their first taste of chemistry! 🔬
- Fine Motor Skills: Squeezing, moulding, and pinching build hand strength and coordination essential for later writing. ✍️
- Imaginative Play: Open-ended play with a unique material sparks creative storytelling and imaginative worlds. 🌟
Pro Tips
For ages 2–4: Supervise closely as very young children may put their hands to their mouths. Cornflour is food-safe and non-toxic, but discourage eating it. Use a shallow tray to contain the mess.
For ages 4–6: Set up a pretend bakery with toy plates, utensils, and a toy rolling pin. Provide cookie cutters for satisfying shape-making.
Store leftover cloud dough in an airtight container — it keeps for weeks! If it dries out, add a few drops of oil and knead again. A drop of essential oil (lavender, orange) adds a lovely sensory boost.
