Ages 3-12 0-1 hours Education 7/10

Materials

  • Baking Parchment
  • Cardboard Tubes
  • Markers
  • Rubber Bands
  • Scissors optional

Illustrated Steps

1

Decorate the Kazoo

Use markers to draw colourful patterns and shapes all over your cardboard tube.

2

Cut the Parchment

Cut a small square of baking parchment large enough to cover the end of the tube.

3

Secure the Membrane

Stretch the parchment tightly over one end and secure it with a rubber band.

4

Hum and Play

Put the open end to your mouth and hum to make the kazoo buzz!

What You’ll Create

You’ll transform a plain recycling item into a fully functional musical instrument! ๐ŸŽบ By stretching a tight membrane of Baking Parchment over a Cardboard Tube, you’ll engineer a classic kazoo. When you hum into it, your voice vibrates the paper, creating a hilarious buzzing sound that’s perfect for starting a family marching band!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Decorate the Kazoo

Use your Markers to give your Cardboard Tube some personality. Draw stripes, polka dots, stars, or even turn it into a magical dragon. This is your personal instrument, so make it loud and proud!

Step 2: Cut the Parchment

Take your Scissors and carefully cut a small square of Baking Parchment (about 10x10 cm). It needs to be just large enough to fully cover the end of your cardboard tube with some overhang.

Step 3: Secure the Membrane

Wrap the square of parchment tightly over one end of the tube. Pull the edges down so the paper is completely flat and taut like a drum skin. Secure it tightly in place by wrapping a Rubber Band around the tube.

Step 4: Hum and Play

Put the open end of the tube to your mouth. Don’t blowโ€”you have to HUM! Try humming a simple tune like ‘Happy Birthday’ or ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ and listen to the paper buzz and amplify your voice! ๐ŸŽถ

Have fun!

  • ๐Ÿฅ Start a family band with other homemade instruments like pots and wooden spoons.
  • ๐ŸŽต Have a ‘kazoo karaoke’ contest where one person hums a song and the others try to guess it.
  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Experiment by singing different vowel sounds (ah, ee, oo) to see how the buzz changes.
  • ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ Carefully poke a small hole in the side of the tube with a pencil and see how covering and uncovering it changes the pitch.

Why It’s Amazing

  • Science of Sound: Demonstrates how sound travels through vibrations, letting kids literally feel the soundwaves! ๐Ÿ“ณ
  • Musical Expression: Encourages rhythm, melody recognition, and pure joyful noise-making. ๐ŸŽต
  • Fine Motor Skills: Stretching the paper and applying the rubber band requires coordination and grip strength. ๐Ÿค
  • Creative Upcycling: Teaches that everyday rubbish can be transformed into something incredibly fun. โ™ป๏ธ

Pro Tips

For ages 3-5: Pre-cut the parchment paper. They might find blowing easier than humming at first, so demonstrate how to ‘sing’ into the tube.

For ages 5-8: Let them try different materials for the membrane (e.g., tissue paper, tin foil, or cling film) to see which makes the best buzzing sound.

For ages 8-12: Challenge them to design a multi-tube kazoo or add keys to change the pitch.
