2

Raise the Masts

Stand two cardboard tubes inside the box and tape their bases firmly to the floor so they stand upright.

3

Hoist the Sails

Cut large paper squares, punch holes at the top and bottom, and slide them over the tubes to make sails.

4

Decorate and Sail

Use markers to draw wooden planks and an anchor on the outside, then climb in and set sail!

What You’ll Create

You will build a large, play-sized pirate ship using cardboard boxes. Kids can design their own flag, raise the cardboard tube masts, and set sail across the living room seas!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Shape the Hull

Take your largest cardboard box and cut off the top flaps to create an open boat. For a more authentic look, cut the front of the box into a pointed bow shape and tape it securely.

Step 2: Raise the Masts

Stand two cardboard tubes upright in the centre of the box. Secure them firmly to the floor of the box using plenty of tape. These will be the masts for your sails.

Step 3: Hoist the Sails

Cut two large squares from paper. Punch a hole at the top and bottom of each square, then carefully thread them onto the cardboard tubes so they billow out like wind-filled sails.

Step 4: Decorate and Sail

Use markers to draw wooden planks, anchors, and a fearsome pirate flag on the sides. Tie some string from the masts to the bow for rigging, then climb aboard and start your adventure!

Have fun!

  • Take turns being the captain and shouting orders.
  • Use a smaller box to make a treasure chest.
  • Look out for imaginary sharks and sea monsters.

Why It’s Amazing

  • Imaginative Play: Encourages deep, narrative-driven roleplay.
  • Engineering Skills: Children learn about structural stability when securing the masts and shaping the hull.
  • Creative Expression: Decorating the ship allows for open-ended artistic freedom.

Pro Tips

If the masts wobble, try taping them to the sides of a smaller, heavy box placed inside the main hull for extra support.
