Cardboard Pinball Machine
Transform an old box into a working arcade pinball machine using rubber bands and popsicle sticks. Can you hit the high score?
Materials
- Cardboard Boxes
- Marbles
- Popsicle Sticks
- Rubber Bands
- Scissors
- Tape
Illustrated Steps
Prepare the Game Board
Cut the top flaps off the box and lower the front edge to create a slanted surface.
Build the Flippers
Tape popsicle sticks at the bottom corners, angling up toward the centre.
Add the Bouncy Obstacles
Create bumpers by stretching rubber bands around pairs of taped popsicle sticks.
The Marble Launcher
Make a slingshot tube at the bottom right with a rubber band to shoot the marbles.
What You’ll Create
You will engineer your very own tabletop arcade game! By combining a slanted Cardboard Box with bouncy Rubber Bands and wooden Popsicle Sticks, you’ll build a working pinball machine. Launch the Marbles, watch them ricochet through your custom obstacle course, and challenge your friends to beat your high score!
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Prepare the Game Board
⚠️ Adult Helper Needed — Have an adult use Scissors to cut off the top flaps of your Cardboard Box. Cut the front panel down so it’s lower than the back, creating a slanted playing field when the box sits on a table.
Step 2: Build the Flippers
Tape two Popsicle Sticks to the bottom corners of your board, angling them slightly upwards toward the centre. Leave a small gap between them for the marble to fall through if you miss!
Step 3: Add the Bouncy Obstacles
Stretch Rubber Bands around pairs of Popsicle Sticks and tape them securely to the middle of the board to create bouncy bumpers. Add small cardboard ramps to guide the ball.
Step 4: The Marble Launcher
Tape a small cardboard tube or folded piece of cardboard to the bottom right side. Stretch a rubber band across it to create a slingshot mechanism that will shoot your Marbles to the top of the board.
Have fun!
- 🎯 Draw targets with different point values inside the box.
- 🏆 Host a family tournament to see who can keep the marble in play the longest.
- 🎨 Customise your arcade machine with bright colours and flashing stickers.
- 🔄 Redesign the obstacle course by moving the bumpers around.
Why It’s Amazing
- Physics & Engineering: Kids explore kinetic energy, gravity, and angles as they design their bouncy obstacles. ⚙️
- Fine Motor Skills: Stretching rubber bands and placing targets requires precision and hand-eye coordination. 👐
- Creativity: Designing the theme of the pinball machine sparks imaginative play. 🎨
- Problem Solving: Testing the board and fixing “dead zones” where the ball gets stuck teaches iteration. 🧠
Pro Tips
For ages 5–8: Keep the obstacle course simple with just a few bumpers and let them focus on the joy of launching the marble.
For ages 8–12: Challenge them to add “trap doors” using cups, or spinners made from cardboard and toothpicks.
