Illustrated Steps

1

Cut the Bottle

Adult helper: carefully cut the bottom off a plastic bottle with scissors. Keep the neck end intact.

2

Attach the Sock

Stretch a sock over the cut end and secure it tightly with tape or a rubber band.

3

Mix Bubble Solution

Mix washing-up liquid with water in a shallow bowl โ€” about two tablespoons to a cup.

4

Blow Your Bubble Snake

Dip the sock end in solution, blow gently through the neck, and watch your bubble snake grow!

What You’ll Create

Get ready for the most spectacular bubbles you’ve ever seen! ๐Ÿซง Your little bubble engineers will transform a plastic bottle and an old sock into a magical bubble snake machine. Dip the sock end into washing-up liquid solution, blow gently through the neck of the bottle, and out comes an incredible, wriggling, multicoloured snake made entirely of tiny bubbles โ€” it just keeps going and going!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Cut the Bottle

โš ๏ธ Adult Helper Needed โ€” Take an empty plastic bottle (500ml works great) and carefully cut the bottom off with scissors. You want a clean, smooth cut. Recycle the bottom piece. The neck end stays intact โ€” this is where you blow! Make sure there are no sharp edges. ๐Ÿผ

Step 2: Attach the Sock

Stretch an old sock over the cut end of the bottle. Pull it on tight so the fabric is taut across the opening like a drum skin. Use tape or a rubber band to secure it in place so it won’t slip off when you blow. The sock fabric is the secret โ€” it splits your breath into hundreds of tiny bubbles! ๐Ÿงฆ

Step 3: Mix Bubble Solution

Mix washing-up liquid with a splash of water in a shallow bowl or plate. About two tablespoons of washing-up liquid to a cup of water works well. You want it nice and soapy! Stir gently โ€” you don’t want foam yet, save the bubbles for the snake! ๐Ÿซง

Step 4: Blow Your Bubble Snake

Dip the sock end of your bottle into the bubble solution, making sure the fabric is nicely coated. Then blow gently and steadily through the bottle neck. Watch in amazement as a magnificent, wriggling snake of tiny bubbles emerges from the sock! Keep blowing for the longest snake you can make! ๐Ÿ

Have fun!

  • ๐ŸŒˆ Add drops of food colouring to the sock for a rainbow-striped bubble snake!
  • ๐Ÿ† Have a competition โ€” who can blow the longest snake before it breaks?
  • ๐ŸŽถ Try different blowing speeds โ€” gentle makes a thick snake, hard makes a long thin one!
  • ๐Ÿงช Experiment with the soap mixture โ€” more soap = better bubbles!

Why It’s Amazing

  • Breath Control: Blowing steadily through the bottle develops respiratory control and lung capacity โ€” great for speech development too. ๐Ÿ’จ

  • Science in Action: Children see how the sock fabric divides one stream of air into hundreds of tiny bubble chambers. Surface tension, air pressure, and geometry all at work! ๐Ÿ”ฌ

  • Engineering Mindset: Building the tool from recycled materials shows children they can invent and create useful things from everyday objects. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

  • Sensory Joy: The tactile, visual experience of a massive bubble snake emerging is pure magic โ€” it sparks wonder and curiosity. โœจ

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“5: An adult should cut the bottle. Help secure the sock. These little ones might need practice blowing steadily โ€” show them how to blow gently like blowing out birthday candles. The bubble snake is so exciting they’ll want to do it over and over!

For ages 5โ€“8: Let them help with assembly (adult still cuts). Encourage experimentation โ€” what happens with different socks? Different soap concentrations? Can they catch the bubble snake without popping it?

For ages 8โ€“12: They can handle the full build independently (with supervision for cutting). Challenge them to engineer improvements โ€” double-layered socks, different bottle sizes, adding glycerine to the solution for stronger bubbles. Keep a record of their longest snake!

Secret Pro Move: Add a tiny drop of glycerine (from the chemist) to your soap mixture โ€” it makes the bubbles much stronger and your snake will grow incredibly long before breaking! For coloured snakes, dab food colouring directly onto the sock fabric. ๐ŸŽจ
