Balloon Stress Ball

Fill a balloon with flour to create a squishy, squeezable stress ball, then decorate it with a funny face using markers!

Ages 3-10 0-1 hours Education 5/10

Materials

  • Balloons
  • Markers
  • Plain Flour
  • Plastic Bottles
  • Scissors
  • Spoon

Illustrated Steps

1

Make the Funnel

Cut the top off a plastic bottle to make a funnel. Stretch the balloon over the neck.

2

Fill with Flour

Spoon flour through the funnel into the balloon until it's tennis-ball sized.

3

Seal the Balloon

Remove from funnel, squeeze out excess air, and tie the neck in a tight knot.

4

Decorate the Face

Draw a funny face with markers. Add a second balloon layer for extra strength!

What You’ll Create

The ultimate squeeze toy! ๐ŸŽˆ Your little scientists will fill a balloon with plain flour using a funnel to create a wonderfully squishy, squeezable stress ball. The flour-filled balloon moulds to your hand, bounces back into shape, and feels incredibly satisfying to squish. Draw a funny face with markers and you’ve got a pocket-sized fidget friend!

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Make the Funnel

Cut the top off a plastic bottle (about a third of the way down) to create a wide funnel. Alternatively, roll a piece of paper into a cone shape. Stretch the balloon opening over the funnel neck. ๐Ÿ”ง

Step 2: Fill with Flour

Spoon plain flour through the funnel into the balloon. Use a spoon to push it through. Fill the balloon until it’s about the size of a tennis ball (roughly 3โ€“4 spoonfuls). Tap the funnel to help flour settle down. The fuller it is, the squishier it’ll be! ๐ŸŒพ

Step 3: Seal the Balloon

Carefully remove the balloon from the funnel. Pinch the neck and let out any excess air (you don’t want air inside โ€” just flour). Tie the balloon neck tightly in a knot, as close to the flour as possible. Trim any excess neck with scissors. ๐ŸŽˆ

Step 4: Decorate the Face

Use markers to draw a face on your stress ball โ€” googly eyes, a silly grin, a surprised expression, or a monster face! For extra durability, stretch a second balloon (with the neck cut off) over the first one for a double layer. Squeeze, squish, and enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜„

Have fun!

  • ๐Ÿ˜œ Draw different emotions โ€” happy, sad, angry, surprised โ€” for a feelings toolkit!
  • ๐ŸŽจ Layer two or three balloons of different colours with small holes cut in the outer ones for a polka-dot effect!
  • ๐Ÿคน Make three and try juggling them โ€” they’re the perfect weight!
  • ๐Ÿ”ฌ Try filling with rice, lentils, or sand โ€” how does each filling feel different?

Why It’s Amazing

  • Sensory Science: The flour-filled balloon demonstrates how a solid (flour) can behave like a liquid when contained โ€” a concept called granular physics! ๐Ÿ”ฌ

  • Emotional Regulation: Squishing a stress ball is a proven technique for managing big feelings โ€” kids learn a healthy coping strategy through play. ๐Ÿง

  • Fine Motor Strength: Regular squeezing builds hand and finger muscle strength, which helps with handwriting and other precision tasks. โœ‹

  • Material Properties: Comparing different fillings (flour vs. rice vs. sand) teaches observation, comparison, and descriptive vocabulary. ๐Ÿ“Š

Pro Tips

For ages 3โ€“5: Adults should handle the filling and tying. Let kids spoon flour into the funnel and do all the face drawing. The squishing is endlessly entertaining at this age!

For ages 5โ€“8: Let them help with filling and tying. Make a set of emotion faces โ€” happy, sad, angry, scared โ€” and use them to talk about feelings. Great for emotional literacy!

For ages 8โ€“12: Experiment with different fillings and record how each feels. Calculate how much flour fits in different balloon sizes. Research the science of granular materials โ€” why does flour in a balloon feel solid when squeezed quickly but flow when moved slowly? (It’s the same physics as quicksand!)

Secret Pro Move: Add a few drops of essential oil (lavender or peppermint) to the flour before filling โ€” every squeeze releases a calming scent, making it a proper relaxation tool! ๐ŸŽฏ
